At Expedition Foods, we are privileged to talk to some amazing people who take on adventures of all shapes and sizes. Every now and then you come across a really special adventure that has a touching story behind it. "Olive's Long Walk to Kenya Fundraiser" is just such a story, that we're very excited to be a part of. Below is an excerpt from her website.
"Picture this. You and your family live in a shack on a dump site with no beds, no electricity, no nothing. Just each other. This is not you but it is someone. Many people actually. They can't do anything about it, but I can. WE can. In the summer of 2024, I will be traveling to Kenya with Tiverton High School. We will be helping to turn an abandoned building into a school so that the children in Kenya can be educated. Olive - Year 9 Student."
When Olive visits Kenya her tasks will range from assisting in the classroom, maintenance and improvement work to school buildings, to helping prepare and serve food at the community drop-in centre. She will also have the chance to carry out home visits to families living on the Hilton Dump site in Nakuru, distributing aid packages and donations.
Olive has taken on quite the project to raise funds to go to Nakuru, Kenya, choosing to walk the length of the South West Coastal Path. A significant undertaking for anyone! The 630-mile national trail stretches from Minehead on the North Somerset Coast to Poole on the south coast of Dorset. At fourteen years old, Olive has to take it a chunk at a time, walking in sections whenever she can since February half term.
Starting in mid-February during an unusually settled spell, Olive set off from Poole to Charmouth taking on some 70 miles of the incredible hilly coastal paths. The Jurassic coast never disappoints. Her journey carried on from Charmouth to Exmouth in March and Exmouth to Salcombe in April. As of late June, Olive was over half way and on track to make not only Minehead in good time but also to reach her fundraising goals.
There are plenty of great updates on Olive’s GoFundme page, check it out here. It includes recommendations on campsites, ice-cream parlours and some insight into the route itself. We’ve heard that Olive loves Expedition Foods Spaghetti Bolognese and would be quite happy living off it as an adult. High praise indeed!
Olive’s school is working with African Adventures Foundation, who state: ‘Our aim is to increase opportunity within education, enabling young people to positively influence their future pathways. You can read more about the organisation here.
We’ll be following Olive’s progress through the second half of the South West Coastal patch and wishing her fine weather and lots of great ice cream! Go Olive!!
