Eat, Paddle, Sleep, Repeat: Life on the Yukon 1000

November 06, 2025

An Unsupported 1,000‑Mile Challenge

The Yukon 1000 is an unsupported, roughly 1,000‑mile paddling expedition that runs from the Yukon in Canada into Alaska. It crosses remote subarctic wilderness, demanding navigation, self‑reliance, and long days of continuous paddling.

Applications for the 2026 race have been open since summer, and teams are already finalising kit, food plans, and strategies for one of the toughest endurance races on the planet.

Canoe-Race

A Firsthand Account Of The Race

The Yukon 1000 was the most challenging, and most rewarding, experience of my life. It took 7 days, 15 hours, and 40 minutes to paddle 1,000 miles unsupported from Canada into Alaska. With 18 hours of paddling each day and just 3.5 hours of sleep a night, we had to be strategic about our nutrition. That’s where Expedition Foods truly came in and added value.

Expedition-Foods-Yukon

Expedition Foods meals are easy to prepare—essential whilst moving in a canoe—and highly calorific, which was critical for sustaining 18-hour days of exertion. They quickly became a vital part of our kit and daily routine. The fact that they were genuinely tasty was a welcome bonus. Enjoying one of my favourite meals— Expedition Foods Chicken Tikka With Rice—over 4,000 miles from home on a canoe, in the remote wilderness, was brilliant.

River race

My advice: take a mix of rations for breakfast. Variety helps, and nothing boosts morale like a hearty, warm start to the day. For mains, we stuck to Expedition Foods freeze-dried rations to keep weight down, and we threw in a mix of desserts to add to our daily snacks of nuts, dried meats, and protein bars.

Ian Martin, participant in last year's Yukon 1000

Why Food Makes The Difference

  • Ease of preparation: Preparing meals while stopped briefly at a riverbank or in a tent needs to be fast and simple. Expedition Foods meals meet that need perfectly, avoiding wasting precious time.
  • Calorie density: On days of 18 hours of exertion, the calorie expenditure quickly adds up. High‑calorie meals keep the paddlers' engines running and help maintain strength and focus.
  • Taste and morale: Expedition Foods meals are tasty, which matters way more than you’d think. Being able to eat something familiar and enjoyable—like Chicken Tikka with Rice—over 4,000 miles from home, in remote wilderness, can lift morale and give you the boost you need to keep going!

Practical Food Strategy for the Yukon 1000

  • Breakfast: Expedition Foods breakfasts are warming and comforting first thing. A warm, hearty breakfast does wonders for morale and preparedness for the day ahead.
  • Mains: Take one or two Expedition Foods main meals per day so you can  pack in the calories efficiently. Expedition Foods meals are all calorie-dense and quick to rehydrate.
  • Snacks: Keep a steady stream of calories between meals—nuts, dried meats, protein bars, and small dessert items. Desserts are not frivolous; they’re morale boosters and easy calorie hits when you’re tired.
  • Balance: Rotate meals so your crew doesn’t burn out on the same flavours. A little variety can help to prevent boredom and to maintain your all-important calorie intake.

How To Pack And Plan Meals For Long River Races

  • Weigh every choice: Prioritise calories per gram and preparation simplicity.
  • Test at home: Make up and eat some of your chosen race meals during long training days to get used to preparing and eating them in similar circumstances.
  • Distribute carefully: Put frequently eaten items in easy‑to-reach dry bags; secure emergency rations separately.
  • Plan for contingencies: Bring a few extra meals per person in case of delays, bad weather, or slower progress than expected.

Final Thoughts

The Yukon 1000 is a brutal and beautiful test of endurance, teamwork, and planning. Food isn’t just fuel—it’s a core component of race strategy and crew wellbeing. The right meals mean fewer decisions, faster refuelling, and moments of real comfort in a vast, challenging landscape. If you’re preparing for this race or another challenge, it's never to early to start making nutrition plans: they’re as important as boat design and navigation.
